Jammed window lock

Hi,
The locks on one of my windows has broken. The lock has been unlocked with the key, however whenever I press down I cannot twist the handle up to open. It just stays jammed. Is there anything I can try before I ring the locksmith, which I really dont want to do.
Thanks!
UPDATE: because it is actually a broken button not handle, i have created a new thread here forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=76270466#post76270466 copy and paste into browser

Can you remove the handle from the window? There may be a screw under a vanity patch (to hide the screw, they can be prised off). Unfortunately, the other screw may be concealed by the closed handle...0
