I had a recent experience. Moved to a 1920s house in need of renovation and had an electrical check by an electrician who said a full re-wire is not necessarily needed. The CU was kind of recent less than 10y old, and the house was safe. Plugs were not in convenient places.
Since the house needs lot of redecorating, and this includes plastering a lot of the walls, we are doing a full re-wire by parts. We have done the first floor now complete, and we will do downstairs next year. You don't need to do everything at the same time which can help with spreading the costs.
