Boiler firing up when not needed!

Options
Hi,

Looking for some boiler advice please - boiler is a 2003 Ferroli Tempra 18 with an unvented hot-water cylinder in the airing cupboard.

The boiler seems to be firing up all the time even when the heating and hot-water is switched off so there is no draw on the system.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Looking elsewhere on t'web - is it that you may have a frost protection sensor that is playing up? Have you tried to put the CH on to see if it will work or is the fault "locking you out"?. General opinion seems to be that this brand/model is not very reliable and is expensive to fix.

My guess would be a sticky motor or end switch which is not closing, on either the heating or hot water valves. This will "trick" the boiler to believing there is a demand from either of these circuits and therefore the boiler will run outwith time and temperature demand.
I squirt of WD 40 in the motor might get you by for a while, or if motor is seized it will require to be replaced,

Interestingly, I was just this afternoon chatting with a gas engineer who explained that boilers often come on in the night for a short period, to avoid freezing (same as the frost protection sensor that ka7e mentioned, maybe?) He said it doesn't use a lot of gas (e.g., not enough to heat up radiators, etc.) Maybe that's what you are hearing and as ka7e said, it's set to be too sensitive?
