Coop telephone lines down!!

Posting for my sister, she has received a letter from the coop about her account and has been trying to contact them on the number suggested, but it keeps saying 'not in service' which is frightening her even more as she feels there has been a breach on her current account. Does anyone know about the service being 'down', or is she in the middle of a fraud attempt? There is a site called 'downdetector' or similar which shows most of England as orange for the co-0p, does that mean it is having problems?

Many thanks for any help to stop us panicking.

Not sure what exactly you're asking. Coop banking is running fine as far as I can see - I just logged in with no trouble.
I've not tried to phone them up though as I have no need to.

But what is your sister worried about exactly? What did the letter say? Why is she trying to ring them?

Why does she think there's a breach of her current account? Which i assume is with the Coop Bank (you don't actually say!).

  • I had a call from them today, routine fraud check on a large payment. They left a message on my answerphone. Couldn't verify the number they gave as a genuine Co-op number so rang back on the 212 212 number just in case. It was all genuine and I got through easily.

Point being, I wouldn't use the number in the letter if it can't be verified and, as it's not working anyway, I'd ring on a genuine number as quoted above.
  • Both of the two numbers above are not ringing but a message is saying ' this number is currently not in service'

She received a letter quoting the 6000 number above, thanking her for calling and updating her security information. She has not called them for this or any other purpose!, and, or course firstly calling the number on the said letter and receiving that message alerted her to think something may be wrong so she called the 212 number and that too was saying the same message.

She does not use the online service much, but is saying she cannot get online to them!

As mentioned, the 'downdetector! page is showing most of England as orange which I presume means there is a problem, but I can find no other mention, so I thought perhaps there may have been some help on here, so I apologise for troubling you.

I just called both these numbers, and they are both working fine. COOP online banking is working fine, too, and so is the app. I can't see anything unusual on downdetector for the COOP bank in the last 24 hours.

The 212212 number connected fine for me albeit they were closed.

I would have used a landline phone or at least a different phone to see if the number was still unattainable.

    What number is she dialling?

    +44(0)345 600 6000 isn't the best way to format a phone number.

IIRC BT used to recommend that telephone numbers were presented in national and international format separately if required:

    UK: 0345 600 6000
    International: +44 345 600 6000

    +44(0)345 600 6000 is ambiguous.
