  • You did the right thing -
Hate it when they try to tag the VAT at the end.
Estate agents love to do that - no mention of it until much later when they send you the contract.
I have a side business and we make less than 70K with my wife in it - this means we are not liable for VAT, this also means our customers do not get charged VAT!

The OP didn't get a quote. This was an informal discussion over the phone.

Not really hard to add 'plus vat' when mentioning the price, informal or not. Why create problems by not mentioning it.

What does your wife have to do with whether you have to register your business for VAT?

  • A Motor Factor's where I used to live always used to quote prices without VAT (presumably to appear cheaper?) and it caught lots of people out until the MF's started getting people saying they didn't want the parts after all when they'd been ordered in.

All wholesalers quote prices ex. VAT.

A motor factor (a proper one, not Halfords or GSF) will do almost all of their business with garages, so if they get a call about a part they will start from the position it's from a VAT registered business and treat them accordingly, which means prices without VAT as the buyer will be reclaiming it.

A household cleaning service, not so much.

This was a high street retailer, not wholesaler.

poor punctuation and additional words that make the sentence unclear? The "in it" should not have been there.
