hp update nearly broke my pc

Options
I recently got a new pc model 590-p0057na and there were suggested updates via the hp support assistant. Firstly why arent they all just a straight forward download, install and restart? With some you need to select certain things but it gives you no clue at all what is the correct action. Firstly a bios update caused the pin log in to get an error then what i think was a graphic driver update stopped the system from starting up. Uninstall recent update, repair function etc all failed to fix it. I ended up having to do a windows reinstall to sort it.
Now i am scared to do any updates at all. What precautions could i take to limit potential future disasters?
Windows 10 is not user friendly at all.
If i buy insurance cover do the policies include things like updates ruining your system?

Hmmm you do realise Life Insurance pays out on Death usually. Why not ask on here first before installing anything if you're not certain what to do, warranties / insurance etc don't cover software usually.

    Ignore hp support assistant suggestions.

I think I may have to but new updates usually appear quite often. I didn't ask for advice first because on my previous pc that had vista I never had any issue with updates. they all solely came through windows update then though.
what about windows update? do I need to be cautious with that also?

I would say no but hey Microsoft has been known to make big mistakes with their twice yearly updates(soon to be annual only)and have pulled them. The regular updates rarely cause probs , but of course having backups is always a good idea.

I expect we are going to see a lot more of you here.
It's not that Windows 10 is not user friendly. It's a mix of it being a totally new operating system to you, completely new hardware, proprietary HP software etc
So now there are just more opportunities for things to go wrong.
Added to this, your device has Windows 10 Home installed. Home gives you less control over the update process.

As you know I did my best to get you to go through the intermediate process of upgrading your old device and installing Windows 10 Pro.

That way there would have been no HP bloatware to confuse the issue and we would have control over the whole process. from the choices made on install and control over security and feature updates.

All in all, giving you an opportunity to understand what was possible.

But you've made your choice. You can contact HP to ask them whether they will support the kind of issue to which you refer and if not, whether they will do so if you purchase the Care Pack to which I referred you.

No one here can guarantee how long your device will last or that you won't have any problems with the device. Nor will they be able to support you with your individual issues with Windows 10, if they are specific to your install.
You'll just get generic advice, such as to roll back.
At least with the Care Pack, they can connect to your device remotely and take a look at the issue for you.

Throwing money at an issue isn't always the best way to go about it. Without basic knowledge, you are always going to be at the mercy of the marketeers.
So now you just have to make the best of what you've got. Good luck.

I dont think control over the update process is the issue. I can and have turned auto update off. How would i know what problem an update might do? How am i supposed to know what to do when faced with options that require technical knowledge without doing some sort of training? How would upgrading the previous system so that it could run windows 10 prevent issues with iffy updates occurring. The thing is with them is you dont know theres going to be a problem until the problem happens. So what you need is for either them to pull their fingers out and stop sending out iffy updates or for us to gain technical knowledge of how to deal with the resulting problems.
Bloatware? Not a lot came with it already installed. how would having the likes of candy crush really cause a problem. The storage is not full and the speed of the system is good,it starts up in about 30 seconds.
Regarding the care pack connecting to it. Would it do that and sort the issue when the pc wont start up properly like what was happening before i fixed it?
  • The term bloatware pertains to the Manufacturer installed things like HP support assistant, trials of Antivirus and Office Software, and other "Helpers" which don't come with a clean install of Windows, but usually run in the background un-necessarily. Candy crush is Microsoft bloat which can be removed if needed or not if wanted.

My daughter and granddaughter have identical HP laptops. One is factory set up and one is a clean W10 install, the difference in speed is startling !

I find it more of a pain on a phone as you usually cant even delete a lot of the apps you dont want and storage is more limited on a phone. On a pc unless they take up lots of resources or cause problems theres no big deal.
