USB charging cable; Nexus 5 versus 5X.
My daughter has a Google Nexus 5 phone. She needs a usb charging cable to allow her to charge her phone from her HP laptop and also for connection to the usb port in her car.
She bought a twin pack of cables from eBay which was described thus “USB Type C 3.1 USB 2.0 Charging Data Cable Lead For Nexus 5X 6P”.
Although the usb cable ‘micro’ connector fits into her phone perfectly there is no charge being delivered to the phone. Tried both new cables with several chargers and different usb ports on the laptop. No joy with either cable.
I notice the eBay advert says “cable lead for Nexus 5X”...is this usb charging cable compatible with a Nexus 5?... (given that the micro usb connector appears??? to be compatible with her phone ).
Duff cables perhaps???
As ever, all replies gratefully received.:)

Its best to charge a mobile from a wall charger, not a laptop which will be very slow.
Nexus 5X is USB C connection
The 5 is USB micro connection

If a USB C cable fits perfectly into the micro-USB port on her phone, then the phone is very badly broken.
Are you sure it's a Nexus 5, and do you have a link to the cables you bought?0 -

I'll double check that it's a Nexus 5,...although from what you've said there seems to be some doubt now ;...it'll probably be tonight though. My daughter’s at work atm and we live 100 miles apart. (remote support is never easy, eh!)
I assume from the info you’ve posted that a usb charging cable for a Nexus5X is NOT compatible with a Nexus5 ?
If the phone is actually a Nexus5X then I assume the purchased cables should be compatible ???
I’ll post some definitive info this evening if I can;...apologies that my thread starter is now looking so vague/unclear.
Here’s the link to the ebay ad:

Use a wall charger, they are very cheap;...she has a mains wall charger that has a permanently attached charging cable;...I think it came with the phone when it was purchased. It works perfectly.
However, she now wants the usb charging cables to give her more flexibility when it comes to keeping her phone topped-up etc. i.e. out and about with her laptop, or when she’s in her car.0 -

I use this in the car, it needs a 12v cig lighter socket though:

Works very well, I can charge my USB C Sony Xperia and my Lenovo tablet at the same time.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

... she doesn’t intend to discard the wall charger,...it will still be the primary (and fastest!) charging source.
However, she does want the flexibility of additional usb phone charging options, should the need arise.0 -
Nothing wrong with charging a phone by connecting it to a laptop. No, it's probably not as fast as using the wall charger, but it's often more convenient.
I'm not in the least bit surprised that a £1.49 USB-C to USB-A cable - even if it's USB2.0 - doesn't work. Expect to pay around £5 for a decent brand like Anker or even Amazon Basics.0 -

Just spoke to my daughter;....upon closer inspection it turns out that the phone is a Nexus 6P.
However,....she called into Aldi for shopping on her way home from work and spotted a compatible cable next to the check-out aisle.

It’s a Usb-A to Usb-C 2metre braided cable...£5.99, appears to be decent quality and most important of all,...it charges her phone!...both in her car and from her laptop;... Halle soddin' lujah.
As per your suggestion I was just checking out a possible Anker usb-c cable just before she rang me and I spotted this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-PowerLine-Durability-Devices-Samsung/dp/B01GN0M6NE/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pl_foot_top?ie=UTF8&th=1
It’s suitable for a whole host of devices but there is a specific footnote that says, quote: “Does not support full speed charge for Nexus 5X or 6P “...not sure what to make of that footnote;...does it indicate a short-coming of the cable?... or the phone itself ?...what do you reckon? :huh:0
