Router recommendation?

I have a non wireless desktop, and 2 wireless laptops that I'd like to use wire-lessly so I've got a couple of questions:

1. Will 1 router be sufficient for 3 computers?

2. Is it better to buy a card to plug into the desktop or one of the USB type jobbies?

3. Can anybody recommend a good, cheapish router?

It all depends on the range and distance in the house, but you should be ok with one. Belkin and Netgear have some good versions about at the moment.

A card will be ok if you PC isn't in the corner of a room, miles away from the router, but if it is, use a USB dongle, as you can position it to get a better signal.

Personally I've never had any success with wireless in buildings, the signals have always been useless for high-speed transfer which I needed. So abandoned it and either used wired Ethernet or power-line networking (which networks via the ring main in your house).
  • 1. Yes, more than enough - they allow 200+ connections!
    2. Difficult to say. Some USB wireless adapters come with a cable to allow you to position it for a better signal, something you can't do with an internal card or USB dongle.
    3. Netgear WGR614 for broadband via cable/DSL, or Netgear DG834G for ADSL (phone line).
  • D-link routers are good. they are easy to set up and come with a USB dongle for your PC:D
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

Just Because you read it some where don't mean it's right ;)

    1. Does the speed drop or something the more computers are logged on?

    3. Does the Netgear DG834G adsl come with whats needed to make the desktop wireless?

    sorry to be a biff.

If I'm understanding correctly, I need something like this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/369188#productInformationSection

    and this

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@2141551631.1195841443@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciaddmikmjfegcflgceggdhhmdfnm.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=857357&category_oid=

to make the desktop wireless, or do they both need to be the same make?

Although I've only got 2 USB ports, perhaps I should buy a card instead.

  • The more computers are connected and sharing the internet connection and surfing/downloading, the slower the speed to each computer.

  • Yes, it's that easy....

Don't forget to encrypt the wireless signal.
  • Do you need to make the desktop wireless. If it is near the phone point, and has an ethernet card, just plug it into the network card with the supplied cable, and leave wireless for the laptops.

PC world aren't cheap, amazon or ebuyer will be much cheaper even with next day delivery.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
