I am just concerned about having to sell things - honestly I just don’t think anyone can expect that I have the time in my life to sell a sofa, tv, fridge etc. The contents of her house do not amount to much

Don't worry about it. Unless she has any expensive items, the value of her household contents will be almost nothing.

You only have to look at the freebie sites to see that people can't give away a lot of old furniture. Take any items of sentimental value and paperwork now and then ask a charity to clear the rest.

Official person that would be first in line to administer the estate is the spouse.

Clear the accommodation now of everything that needs put aside for safe keeping.

Then you have the option to walk away from everything else including clearing the property.
  • My father isn’t an option - they separated 18 years ago and we haven’t had contact with him since then because of the difficult circumstances of the separation.

Yes but personal circumstances don't change the legalities of the situation. Husband is next of kin.

The next of kin, in a legal sense, is the nearest blood relative-which is the OP and any siblings. But the father could also claim, were he interested. If the bank is allowed to wind up the estate, then the assets will be even less, as banks charge heavily for such a service. In this case, the admin should be very simple indeed,
OP would be well advised to get her mother to give away the £7K to her siblings now if she wants them to inherit anything, as long as she is capable of making such a decision.
The creditors will not be interested in the proceeds of the household effects, as the value at auction will be tiny.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
