OH looks after day to day matters. I look after the savings. Works well. OH has no interest in investments as such.

Because of her outlook, I'm gradually moving our investments to multi-asset global funds (mostly trackers but some managed) so that when I depart this mortal coil then leaving them alone for a time should not be too much of a problem.
That's interesting. Where to locate savings and investments is one thing, but what an uninterested and financially uninformed OH should do if you are not there tomorrow is quite another. Have others planned for this?

Warren Buffet has, he’s recommended that his wife invest all of his holdings in passive broad-based funds.

My OH is not clueless, and we will discuss things at varying depths from time to time. I am gradually introducing the idea of internet access and make sure that when there is something new (moving money, changing accounts) that we have a good discussion over it.
Generally I keep an overall eye on things, and am building up a record of the passwords we use in a stand-alone encrypted DB, so that only one master password is needed to access all of the details.

Although I do not use an IFA , I have been thinking that this situation is one where having an ongoing relationship with a good local IFA could be very useful i.e. if the more financially aware partner was no longer around .

Another tactic has been to put more money in her name and 'make ' her open new internet savings and S&S ISA accounts online so it is less unfamiliar territory . Also although she is not naturally interested I make an effort to explain what I am doing every couple of months but not sure how much of it sticks , some anyway.
  • My OH humours me. She lets me use her for referral bonuses and so on, but has little interest in the nuts and bolts of what is going on. For her, money is that stuff that comes once a month, you can spend it until it's gone, and if there's some left over then that's extra to spend later. Spreadsheets don't excite her in the same way they do me - I'm not sure which of us I feel more pity for, to be honest.

My Wife has no interest - she worries about the risks of the stock market, and would rather have it in pound coins under the bed!

I have a 'Dead' folder on the computer with a spreadsheet called 'Where's the money'

Due to risks of hacking, or even physical break-in, maybe better to rename the files something else?

Ideally, encrypt the folder with the key on a USB stick.

A couple of times she has said she doesn't know anyone our age who is likely to be in such a good financial position which might be approval.

Same, in terms of savings and planning. Her work friends & their fellas 'earn a good amount' (more than us), enough for the women to not work at all or only part time but then they blow their money on what we would consider waste and they struggle for money come the end of the month.
I'm seen as the 'weird guy', which i know i am in a way but yeah it's funny that having such an interest in your money working hard is 'weird'. Funny that society is very much spend it while you have it and who cares about tomorrow. I wonder what decade that really started to happen in because my parents certainly weren't like that.

To answer the question, my OH has very little interest. I have freedom to open accounts as i see fit in both our names because she trusts i will not do anything stupid - by that i don't just mean in joint names but in her sole name. She says - i've got an email through, was that you, i say yeah and then it's forgotten.

Occasionally she'll ask some questions. Never probing or accusing but just general querying. I always answer and i'm always honest.

I keep spreadsheets, therefore in the event she wants to know what, where & when i can show her.

I'd like to be able to discuss it and i've tried. She does try to listen but i see her eyes glaze over similar to how i suppose mine do when she talks about hair dye.

For tax reasons Mrs TBC15 has the majority of our investments. Over the years she has been happy with me calling the financial shots, as I’ve spent a lot of time doing it.

All changes to our investments are fully disclosed.

Mrs TBC15 does regard the ebs of the ebs and flows of the market as theft in a jocular way.

I’ve always pointed out that winter is always around the corner and we now have the reserves to weather it out. So we stay aggressively managed invested at all times.

In the event I become ga ga or pass on we or she will move into a tracker.

We both know how things are going by our daily Trustnet portfolio update.

My OH would just spend it given half the chance. She's got no interest in this sort of thing, but once she gets her debt cleared Im going to try & get her invested.
