  • Many employers are open on bank holiday and run events/courses/training/inductions.

Best thing you can do is apply for universal credit and polish the CV up.

The first day was important apparently.

    Yes it will have been.

Literally had an ex work colleague in 2016 who's first day didn't happen when they had a flight delayed after jetting off for the weekend before the first day - by Friday of same week they were let go. I even worked with a crazy bunch of people once when a debate come up about being late to an interview alone meant they would abandon their interview.

Half the fun is getting back out there, especially as you are immediately available. (I'm in the minority as I believe it is easier to get a job when you don't have one) I once went along with a made up story in some rum temporary job that I quickly realised wasn't me, that I'd been offered a permanent job in my hometown which came true (except the job title) and I will now have outlived the duration of that temporary assignment.

You agreed to get there on 26th and broke that agreement.

Sadly, the wedding and your wish for the day off became a non issue when you agreed to be there.

I understand it was all horrible timing and you were in a difficult position all round. With hindsight you shouldn't have agreed to be there but not sure the outcome would have been different in terms of job.

For what its worth, I don't think BT have covered themselves in glory when you made clear your non availability and they arranged your start for that precise date at short notice and after you left your previous job. but the time to challenge it was when you were notified and not when it went wrong on 26th. Someone probably dropped the ball at BT (or didn't care) but unfortunately they had the upper hand.

Your title states it wasn't your fault. Of course it was. Hard as it is to accept, it was your fault.

Everyone handles things differently. I'd have made my own way there on the wedding evening, train, drive, pay a friend, whatever. They're is no way I would not have turned up on Tuesday morning. None. I certainly wouldn't have emailed, I look for solutions, not for others to find them.

Considering you are making such a big thing of your sisters wedding it seems incredulous you then had arrangements your brother also left the wedding to take you.....

You say you left your old job (you didn't lose it, you left it) at the end of July with a start of 10th-17th August, are you genuinely sure your contract stated this as a start date, it seems strange a contract you signed would give 10th-17th as a start date.

I'm not sure what you expect us all to say you can do. Turn up for work, seems obvious....
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I agree. There are very few people on the site who have either experienced virtually every scenario raised, or have 'friends' who have.

Just another MSE snowflake blaiming everybody/everything else but himself.

Tell you what luvvie. Sue your sister for having a wedding the day you should have reported for duty.

Perhaps you should take your own advice from one of your previous replies below in another thread

You need to keep your opinions to yourself matey. All you appear to do is increase your post count, and upset other posters.

In regards to expecting a response on a bank holiday, it is the same thing as who would of thought they would start there training on a bank holiday. I want to know what would you guys have done ? Would you still go to your sisters wedding OR miss the wedding and go to the induction? Mind you, i am very close to my sister and i am glad i did not miss the wedding even at the cost of my job.

I would have paid another family member or friend to drive me there instead or failing that a Taxi driver.
Not the next day though, i'd have done it the night of the wedding regardless of the costs.
I wouldn't risk a good career opportunity slip by so easily.

So the fact that they knew and agreed about the day off requested on 26th and was ignored , doesnt this fact help me in any way?

    Let’s simplify things.

You asked for August 26th off. You got that request, all be it in a round about way.

Your first day was August 27th. You didn’t turn up.

Sometimes we over complicate things and naturally defend ourselves with extra info that really isn’t needed (I’m as guilty as anyone).
Read back the above two statements and things look a lot clearer.
  • It's "Would HAVE" not Would OF!!!" So irritating OP. I WOULD HAVE DONE.. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT. Etc. It's not really that difficult. So annoying when people use 'of' instead of 'have'!

If you left your previous employer on good terms, swallow your pride and ask for your job back.

What's the worst that can happen...they say no.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)
