  • I have multiple bank accounts for different things. You might want one for your main direct debits, one or more for your annual / quarterly bills to save us a pots - either combined or individually and one for long term savings for things like car, kitchen, house deposit etc, separate one for emergency fund... and an account you want to use for long term savings and investment. Some people swear by ynab or monz to help them know whether they are over-spending a category compared with the budget - you have to find what works for you.

Thank you! That's really helpful :)
I think pots will definitely be the way forward for me

So I didn't have a good day yesterday - Went to London to sort out a visa application for a holiday I have booked in October and ending up spending £374  So that's pretty much all my work bonus gone :( I had to spend it though so trying to make myself feel better by telling myself that at least it didn't come out of my main wages and the bonus paid for it!
The holiday has all been paid for in monthly payments so I shouldn't have anything more to pay for it apart from putting some spending money aside for it

I have to spend another £100 tonight on music lessons for this term. I know it's not an essential but I really enjoy it and the only thing I really do outside of work so not wanting to give it up

I signed up for a Monz account so will be using that to save into little pots :T

  • Hey everyone! :)

I had a lovely weekend! Got another work bonus this week of £230 which I've put straight in my new Monz account. I've set up a pot for my car so all my money for this will go directly into here from now on

I didn't end up spending the £100 on music lessons in the end as the tutor is ill and the academy isn't sure when they will be back to start the lessons. So I have put that to one side too so it's separate and I'm not tempted to spend it and then struggle when it comes round to pay! I'm very guilty of doing stuff like this - but decided no more!! This is me being responsible now and accounting for my money and not just blowing it on rubbish every time I have some spare cash thinking "oh well, I'll be paid again soon"

I met a friend over the weekend and she was saying how a house has come up for sale under market value next door to her brother and his wife and it would be ideal for me - I felt so embarrassed that I couldn't tell her that I'm in no position to purchase as I don't have any deposit saved yet and just said that I would look into organising a viewing. I also felt annoyed with myself that I don't have any money saved and because of that I've missed out on a potentially great deal.
The way that I felt just made me realise that I have to change and get my act sorted out otherwise I will continue to miss out on opportunities like this

Been looking at ways I can supplement my income to speed up the money saving process but not seeing anything that I would be able to do

I am nearly 33 and also have been worrying about buying a house recently, im lucky as my mum owns a fair amount and i rent my house from her so although i still pay £1,000 per month, its way under market value and its safe for as long as i want it. However, im constantly thinking that i feel stupid for not buying something for my self a long time ago! ill follow your journey, wish you the best of luck! x

Hello!!! Thank you popping in and showing your support :j
Means a lot to know I'm not alone in feeling how I am!
I guess it's never too late to start making changes :)

  • Feeling a bit low right now :(

Have been trying to organise my budgets and see how much I can realistically put aside each month for a house deposit once I've paid off my credit card and sorted out my car

I can put aside around £1000 every month. If I aim for a 20% deposit that will be £50,000. So that makes it 50 months, which is 4 years!!!
There is no way I can do this before I turn 40 and I feel so disappointed in myself for not being more serious about this sooner

They only thing I can really think to do is to somehow boost my income which is going to be quite hard

The more I look at my budgets, the more overwhelmed I am feeling :(

If anyone out there has any positive words I'd really appreciate it right now!

I feel like maybe I should focus on one thing at a time and just focus on my car for now. I can't keep driving it around for too much longer so need to get a cheap run around soon!
My plan for this is to get a cheap car to last me another few months so I can save up some more money and then next year look at leasing a decent car

Hope you all have a lovely weekend! :j

  • Amazing how things have changed, I'm 51 now and we were buying our own homes at 18 despite interest rates being 16%, never know how we coped.

Dont worry too much about what your friends have, I always find that the reality is not as cushty as you think, and If you save for a deposit and aren't in debt then I reckon you will be doing better than 75% of the others.
My debt by the way was as the result of a disastrous divorce, cost of still paying for the children and the house I dont live in despite it not being my choice to split, I lived in my car for 3 months even earnign £50k a year, anyway.
Looking forward to following your journey.

So true - if I have no debt and actually have savings I am in a much better position than most!
And I do really need to stop comparing myself to my friends!!! I know a lot of them had help, be it from family or a partner - I'm doing this all on my own so I guess it makes sense that my journey will be different to theirs!
