Just bought insurance but need a black box fitted

So I just bought my first car insurance using compare the market and just went with the cheapest provider which requires a black box.

I probably should have researched this before hand but how exactly do I go about getting a black box and having it installed?

The insurance company will tell you that. Sometimes it is something you plug into the ODB2 socket, sometimes it is a box that requires fitting by a technician.

They'll send it to you, some plug into the 12 volt socket others need to be hardwired. In the case of the latter they'll send someone to do it.

Once you have your black box installed make sure you don't speed or you could see your policy cancelled.

Also make sure you don't exceed your declared mileage as additional miles can get very expensive.

Yes, like Miss Daisy but without reversing into parked cars, driving in the wrong lane or taking a century to park at the supermarket whilst others are waiting.

Cancel now and get new insurance. It will cost you if you don't.

    Which company is it with?

Smart Wheels use a third party installer - they email you the number and you arrange to have it fitted at a convenient time at home or work.
Others may send you something in the post and you plug it in yourself (and often have to send it back at the end if you dont renew with them)

I’ve also gone for a telematics policy as it was cheapest. Not too worried as I drive a diesel so no point driving like Lewis Hamilton.

Mine is one where you get a discount next year based on your driving.

My one concern is mileage, I estimated 10k but think I’ll ebd up doing more like 12k, though it is just an estimate rather than a limited mileage policy.

Mine is one you plug into the 12v socket and Velcro under the seat. Yet to install as maximising the time limit for installation (mainly for mileage reasons).

    August 2019: £28.8k

    November 2020: £0 (0% interest)

Call your insurer before you go above your mileage, they'll be able to amend your policy at that point. It'll cost you a bit, but less than if you left it for them to find out from the box!

Depends on his insurance company, not all boxes are in for the duration of the policy.
