British Gas Smart Meter Campaign

Just received a text on my phone thanking me for booking a smart meter installation...
It was news to me so got onto British Gas Online Chat and they confirmed they had "booked me in" for a smart meter installation as part of their Smart Meter campaign.
Have never spoken to anyone about this so I think its totally out of order !.

Politely told them where they could install their meter.....

I would have simply let them turn up and then tell them nothing has been booked and let the engineer continue on his way.
    It's nothing , not nothink.

I had exactly the same thing but with Scottish Power electricity. After many many phonecalls escalating up the managerial pecking order, trying to find out who exactly was responsible for booking the installation as it certainly wasn't me, I received a call the next day apologising for inconvenience and offering £50 off my next electricity bill.

I cynically believe they were targetting pensioners who would be more likely to agree rather than make a fuss, and this would help fill the quota required.

I had the same from npower. They're all at it.

It took a threat that I would leave them if they made smart meters compulsory to stop them.

You need to understand that OFGEM are pushing companies like SSE / NPower etc to get all their customers onto SMART meters by the end of 2020. Potentially they could be fined upto 10% of their turnover - so you can see why they are pushing this.

Doesn't excuse them booking an appointment without your permission.

    Thanks Mark

  • No such pestering from EDF. We've been sent information, have not responded or shown any interest & that is the extent of it from them.

Not my experience with EDF, they called me i said no chance. Then they sent mail and then they called again saying they are fitting them in my area.. and again a week or so later.

Had several generic leaflets and 3 letters now to go with the 3 calls, although they have not called again, although i did add their number to the call blocker.

Wow, no consistency with EDF (thankfully for me!).

My 92 year old mother had been truly pestered by EON, calls, letters, appointments to change her meter because it was "outdated". In the end I gave them such a bollo**ing for harrassing her, it finally stopped.
