Guttering on semi detached house

Hi, a question for you helpful people.

We are in a semi detached house. Both houses have one down pipe each and gutters are connected at front and back of house.

We have a problem with guttering on our side and roofers who came to see said ideally with one downpipe each the gutters should not be connected.

Any thoughts on this? If they are separate then is there some sort of seal between the two to make sure water doesn't get through.

Before doing anything I will of course talk to the neighbour and we are on God terms. But just want to find out whether what the roofers said is correct. He seems like a nice guy and has a good reputation but I have trouble trusting a lot of tradesman...

Thanks

Having your own downpipe just means you won't be affected by your neighbours neglecting their guttering. There's no other reason to do it.
You don't have to separate your guttering from theirs, even with your own downpipe you can leave them connected.

Do you have exactly the same shape guttering as your neighbour?
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

What do you call each other, Neptune or Poseidon presumably?
