Most Dell laptops I have come across have a built in diagnostic tool.

Keep bashing F12 when it is starting, then select "Diagnostics".

You could try creating a linux live usb (xubuntu for example) and booting into it and run it for a while, to see if you get the same problems with a different o/s.

Does 'Harrys nan' sound like the sort of person who is going to start faffing around with Linux ? Jeez

That's a bit condescending to the OP. It's not difficult to boot off a USB and find a web browser to view a few sites or videos and see if the problem occurs. Obviously. if it's too difficult for her she can just ignore my post

Probably best to remove the HDD completely, replacing it with an SSD.
Identifying the exact model, in order to determine whether that can be easily done, would be my first step.

Probably easier than EveryWhere's suggestion of replacing the hard drive with an SSD which not only involves digging around in the hardware, but then a complete install of an O/S

Harry's Nan is sure to have family members...or there would be no Harry.

Though perhaps Harry is the dog and she is all alone in this world...

    LOL

You guys on here are so helpful, but sometimes you could be speaking Martian for all the sense it makes to us mere mortals.

I'm probably of the same or similar generation as OP and while I can research and find my way around troubleshooting/diagnostics options, I wouldn't haven't a clue about replacing a hard drive with SSD:o

That's why you need to ask and be willing to listen. Then you will be guided through it step by step.

But if we don't even know the exact model of laptop involved, how would we be expected to give instructions?
So unless we have a willing participant, there is no point in wasting our time with people who are not willing to learn nor willing to follow step by step instructions.

C'mon, you know better than that not to give the make and model of anything you are asking about. Would guess that you once owned a car, and bought spares, or oil for it. When the shop asked what type of car, your answer would never be 'a grey one', or 'a people carrier' :D

I don't see why not - I'm well past the sell by age and I just love Linux, best move I ever did from Win95!

    'Harry's nan' - go for it! :T
