PIP, Rent and Council Tax

A relative has just started receiving PIP at the low rate along with ESA. She has her 2 children still at home both working full time and informed me that she doesn't have to pay any rent or Council Tax. Surely that can't be true? I've told her she needs to check it out properly. I'd be grateful for any advice .

If claiming daily living rate of PIP then there will be no non dependent deductions for housing benefit. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/non-dependants

Council tax reduction will depend on the local council. Either way, all changes must be reported.
  • Thank you. so basically she has several hundred pound a week going into that house and living rent free.

Do you have a problem with that? The point is as made above that the incomes of her non dependants do not count.

She also has a disability, do you have a problem with that? Her children's money doesn't belong to her, so their income isn't counted when calculating the benefits she claims.

I'm assuming you don't have a disability? Try living with one for a few days and then maybe you won't moan...

    With poppy12345 on this one.

Were you to break it down to the elements within the "several hundred pounds" you will see that it is not a lot. Typically the PIP element will be paid out to a external company that provides home help. The ESA element is to allow living a basic (and I mean basic) life.

The zero council tax will be based on the local policies and likely based on the low income. So zero council tax indicates an income so low that is it deemed necessary to forgive the CT element.

Perhaps you might want to think about helping your relative by offering support - financial and non financial. We other taxpayers are doing it now but you might want to give a little extra to your extended family.
Unlike some here, I am not omniscient. If I am wrong correct me. I won't take offence.
