Is it worth fixing a PS2

I accidentally knocked over my son's PS2 which was sitting on the floor on it's end and it is not working now. He thinks the laser has gone duff. Do you think it's completely dead or worth trying to get it fixed.
Sorry I'm not very technically minded so haven't a clue.

you might want to consider if it isnt better to just buy a new one. you can get a new one for less than £100 now.
  • scout out your local 'fix anything' man (every area has one) and have a word. I know you can buy replacment lasers on ebay for around a tenner, so if you can get someone to fit it for you for 20 odd quid, that's still a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new system :)

yeah, if you can get it done that cheap then do that. i have never had experience of repair men that are that fair with their prices.
  • You could possibly repair it yourself for free http://www.tweak3d.net/joomla/tutorials/hardware-repair/playstation-2-repair for the old model, although you can apply the same principles for the new one. The laser is just probbably knocked out of alignment, I only have the old version and cannot comment about the new, but it is worth a try. BE BRAVE, after all if you were going to take it to a shop/replace it what will you loose?
  • Thanks for that link i will be trying that on DD ps2.

Had similar issues with my son's PS2 (the "fattie" not the slimline version) and I used this guide to disassemble the machine on three separate occasions.....

    http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

I managed to squeak a little more life out of it by re-aligning the laser and a few other minor adjustments but, eventually, the laser gave out. Blue disks won't play but the usual "silver " disks are fine.

I couldnt find a replacement laser that cheap and it looked an awkward job to replace it (even for me ... an electronics man in a former life ;) ).

In the end we bit the bullet and gave it to his little sister and he bought a new slimline PS2 for £80.

Anyway .. .that's my tale of woe. Hope something here helps you out.

last i looked ps2 lasers were between 20-30 quid.
xbox lasers are much cheaper as the ps3 uses a dualhead laser set up.
open it up and try the adjustments but i would replace over repairing if your looking at a new laser.
dont forget to sell the old ps2 as spares or repairs or 'untested' ;)

Hang on folks why is everyone assuming this will be the laser? The guy has said it was knocked on the floor that tells me the laser will more than likely not be damaged but there will be physical damage i.e. cracked circuit board or disconnected plug.
What is the playstation doing and what is it not doing?
