App for free calling?

Hi,

I have trouble calling abroad and my international call charges are killing me. Previously I started using Magic app to call in Europe but now it doesn't work. I need an app through which I can call anyone in the world regardless if they don't have that particular app.

Usually, the other person needs to have a messaging or calling app to make the call. But I need something that doesn't require the receiver to have the app.

Any sugestions?

Do you mean 'free' as in paying nothing at all to any service provider or free as in, pay a reasonable fee/subscription/addon and get inclusive minutes?

We use a variety of apps, depending on who we are calling as everyone has their particular preferences. Mostly its messenger, some its what's app, others its Skype

Skype's always worked well. I used to run a business on Skype - people calling me had no idea I was using Skype, they didn't need to know. They were just phoning a phone number from whatever telephone they were holding, either a landline or a mobile.

Free of any charge? No such thing without the recipient having the same app as yourself. And given you have the likes of FB Messenger, Skype and Whatsapp just for starters there's no reason they couldn't have access to one or the other unless they're stuck with just a landline for some strange reason.

OP, Skype does allow you to call landlines and mobiles for a fee, cheaper than direct calling from what I can recall. The cheapest way is of course app to app, but Skype call charges are pretty reasonable. Last time I used Skype for phone calls was on a holiday in New Zealand, to call UK - £20 credit lasted 6 weeks easily.
Alternatively - my daughter lives in Japan but has a local to me UK phone number via Sipgate phone (might be the same as the voiptalk link above). As our calls to local numbers are free, we can ring her for free. You can use one here to call abroad and calls made from it are cheap - I think my daughter pays about 1p a minute from Japan, as the calls are through the internet not physical line. Worth looking into either.

Ringo.........some destination landlines are free or very cheap, but you use your own UK minutes

The receiving party just answers their phone nothing to install for them

    .
  • I also use the Ringo mobile phone app via "call out" to call Spanish landlines, it comes out of my unlimited mobile minutes (the app calls 0330 104 xxxx) and is 0p per min, no credit needed with Ringo to make those calls. You can also call landlines in Norway, Sweden, plus mobiles in USA and Canada on the same "free" basis, provided you have unlimited minutes on your mobile.

I use my Echo 5 to make free calls, don't know if it works with calls to abroad as I don't know anyone abroad's phone number.

Just dialled a USA phone number and it worked.

    Free calls to America :money:
