Can anyone who can do cross stitch adopt me please??? I'd love to be able to do this but am one of those awful people who needs to be shown how to do something, my brain just won't take it in from a book.

I can sew anything with a needle and thread but can't do anything crafty for love nor money.

It didn't help having a mother who couldn't cook and used all her spare time going out losing money playing bingo and fruit machines :(

My advice would be to start with something small in kit form, (such as a greetings card, small picture etc), where you get the chart to work from, the necessary threads and the cross stitch fabric to work on. Once you've got the basic idea it's dead easy...honest!!

Oh and remember the crosses are all supposed to go the same way! (The first half of the stitch goes from bottom left to top right and the second half from top left to bottom right - do each cross in the same way, not haphazardly) Hope that makes sense? Lots of people don't bother to do that and it does make a difference!

Have a go, I'm sure you would get the hang of it.......

No I didn't sign up but I emailed Winniepooh once and she was thrilled, I told her I visited regularly and was disappointed when there were no posts. She posted on the boards that I had emailed from Wales and was asking someone how they could join me up but I didn't hear anymore and sometimes I can't access the site. I tried to email again the other day and it failed.

She posted once about spreading cream cheese then spring onions (I think) then rolling up the slices and chilling before cutting them up and taking them to church meeting and all disappearing fast, I now do this regularly, not take them to church though.:D

I really do love visiting it's like a step back in time.

    Moggins,

I can cross stitch but struggle to sew on a button.

Best thing to do is to go to newspaper shop and purchase a crossstitch magazine with a freebie kit on the front.

Most of them are about £3.99 an issue. Take it home and sort the threads out. Then go and get a photocopy of the chart from the magazine. A working copy is legal as long as destroy it after wards (before any shouts about copyright)You may want to enlarge the chart to make it easier to see. A highlighter is best to mark off. But be careful not to get it on your hands then on the fabric.

Fold the fabric in the both long ways and short ways to find the middle. Look at the chart and you should find some arrows on the outer edge. Follow them in to the centre and that is the middle of your design.

I personally put a stitch in the top of the fabric so I know what way up for the first few days.

Then just follow the symbols for the colours. And make sure that your stitches all face the same way on the top.

    This site here may help.

PM if you have any questions. I am sure that I can find some threads, fabric and even some charts to help you get started.

    Yours

LOL, thanks calley. I've just remembered that Hobbycraft have some cross stitch cards on offer at the moment so I'll nip down there tomorrow and treat myself to one.

Thanks for all the help and if you ever need a button sewing on or some invisible mending done, I'm your woman!
