Yes, then send a letter before action threatening small claims court.

The lock needs to be changed. The old lock can be retained and it might come in handy at some future point for somebody, so not entirely "useless" as such.

That’s a very good point, the locks are only useless if the location of the barrel is known. Gives me an idea for a “lock exchange” company where you are given a matching used barrel and key in exchange for your old one plus an administration fee and the barrel source and destination locations are randomised and confidential.

Such a thing may exist, but if not, it may have potential 😊👍
    • The rich buy assets.
    • The poor only have expenses.
    • The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.
  • Personally I wouldn't worry about it.

The chance of a cleaner using a key to burgle a property is very low. If they did burgle the property using a key you would know exactly what to tell the police.

If the cleaner wanted to burgle somebody they'd be much more likely to simply break a window of a property with no connection to them.

As vacheron pointed out, anybody with a key could have a copy made at any time for a few quid. So asking the cleaner to return the key doesn't guarantee anything.

Did your mum and dad change the locks when they moved in? If not, the old owner could have a key too.

You don't need to change the lock, just the barrel. It's a 5 minute job, requiring no more than a screwdriver.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
