Is there an alternative to OTP?

I use online banking but OTP's are now stopping me use banking facilities and / or purchasing things on the internet.
I live in the countryside, I do not get a mobile phone signal on any network. I also work away from home off-shore (that means on a boat in the sea and not off-shore as in a 'different country').

I cannot make even the smallest change to my banking without requiring a OTP, which I cannot receive.
Just changing the date on a standing order cannot be done without a OTP.

When I am at home, my wife has to take my mobile phone and drive 2 miles down the road to get a signal, then when she gets the OTP she calls me on the house phone so I can proceed with the change.

This also effects the 'Verified by Visa' thing too, that used to ask for a password but without any notification, it now calls (or attempts to call) my mobile phone with a OTP.
Luckily this is bypassed by a call to my credit card company who can enable a bypass for that purchase.
However, the bank is different, I cannot make a quick call to have a bypass enabled, they completely refuse to do it.

So, my question, is there an alternative (serious, no stupid comments please) to the OTP.
I have asked my credit card company to remove my mobile number so as to force it to use alternative methods, but believe it or not, they refuse to, so I had to change it to an old disconnected number, but still have to ring the company to get a bypass.

Can anyone suggest anything please?

  • Why don't you sue the NIMBY's who prevented a phone mast from being installed near your area, thus preventing you from receiving a signal and having all this inconvenience in the first place?
    :o
  • Do you have internet/WiFi and a smart phone capable of WiFi calling?
This will also allow the receiving of SMS messages.

Is it all mobile networks you can’t get? The WiFi calling option seems the best option for at home. What do others do when on the boat?

    Which bank are you with?
  • Some banks have a digital fob or card reader (e.g. HSBC, first Direct, Barclays) - both would allow access without a signal. Might be worth switching to one of those.
