    Have you considered Spark?

I use them 3 years ago when i went to NZ - due to go back end of November, so will look out for a deal

I purchased from the shop on Queen Street, Auckland

You might benefit from a dual sim phone maybe?

Just be aware that Spark SIMs dont work in all UK phones, I had this issue a couple of years ago in my Whileyfox UK phone had to switch to Vodaphone
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

I think as others have said the issue is if you need to call NZ numbers within NZ (or if people there want to call you) - I don't think the Three deal covers that (my OH has a Three phone and I'm sure when we looked it wouldn't work for calling NZ numbers, or rather it would work but you had to pay for those calls).

This is true. I get around it by using Skype to call local numbers. It might not suit everyone but it works for me.

We bought a Vodafone SIM at Auckland airport when we landed - there are people selling them as you walk through duty free once you're off the plane. They do a 60 day one:

I can't remember what the other networks are, but have a look on the Tripadvisor forum, there's loads of threads there about it.

This is what we did when we went a few years ago. Took an old unlocked phone and then bought one of these when we landed in Christchurch
