Energy debt
A relative has a debt problem with their gas and electricity supplier and owes a largish sum. They are on the Standard tariff which is high compared to what is available.
If they were to move to a different supplier what could be the likely reaction of the current supplier. Will they let them move?
Should they be able to negotiate or agree a pay back plan with the current?
Would a new supplier accept them?
Lots of qs, I know but need to help them with advice.

First - it's good that your relative has recognized the problem.
The existing supplier will probably block any transfer.
Asa first move ring the supplier and ask to be put on their best tariff - details will be on their bill
Next ask for a pay back plan. The supplier may well want o instal a prepayment meter.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
As above. I don't expect the supplier will allow the move.
But contact them and get off the standard variable rate on onto the best deal that the existing supplier can offer.
Then arrange a payment plan that is affordable and that your relative will stick too.
I would try and fight hand and tooth against a prepayment meter being installed as these are a pain to get removed at a later date.0 -
Thank you both for your thoughts. I will pass on the comments.
The thought of a prepayment meter would be worrying. It sounds like something that they can lock you into.Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
What is a 'largish' sum? Above £500, most suppliers will block a switch.
Why is your relative still on Standard tariff despite large arrears? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Also worth looking to see if the supplier has a charity partner - a few of them are found here

They believe the debt is about £500 but not sure, suggested that they look at the invoices or on line in their account. They are now on a better rate but like the majority of people have never thought to look into a better rate.
Had a look at the charity site but they are above the income limit. Inmteresting site though.
Oh by the by, I am not the relative and trying to hide behind the 'relative' word.
I change almost every year and at the moment am on a fix price acheme until next year.
Thanks everyone for your comments, helped to open the thought processes and raise other qs.Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -
So they're in debt, asking you for help, but haven't actually checked their current statement? Yet they have already switched to a better tariff with the same supplier (so not on Standard)? Am I the only one to find this a bit inconsistent?
If you want to help, then do a meter reading and get the billing up to date (assuming the latest bill is estimated). Once you know what the actual debt is, you can tackle the problem by agreeing a repayment plan.No free lunch, and no free laptop
