The data on consumption and year to year comparisons is taken from our bills; On the page where you get the "gas use in detail" there is a table which shows how the gas you have used between the two dates (the period leading up to the bill date) compares with the gas you used between the same two dates the previous year. I wish I could post a picture, but can't figure out how to get a URL!

I have no idea how we only used 134kWhr of gas in the period 24 Jun 18 - 8 Sep 18 - but that's what the bill says, and like I say, there's only two of us using hot water in the summer months - and even less now we aren't using gas for cooking.

I think there's something weird about their figures. Meter readings (converted to kWhr) are the only valid data. Looking back at the bill that covered the period 24 Jun- 8 Sep 2018, you were presumably charged less than £5 for those 134kWhr of gas (excluding standard charge of course, which may have been £15-20 on top)?

If that was the case, I would agree with PennineAcute that your old meter was under reading by a significant amount, or was possibly an imperial meter being treated as a metric meter?
  • Thanks for all your responses: It is indeed all very strange, and we're just going to try and focus now on the outcome of the visit on 4th October to ascertain if there is a fault with the Smart Meter - or if the old one was inaccurate!

At our previous property, the 170 litre hot water tank was taking around 100kWhr a week to heat.

At the property we've just moved to, with a 300 litre (but very well insulated) tank, we initially seemed to be using 130kWhr, but last week I tweaked the tank stat down from thermonuclear to very hot and consumption was just 52kWhr.

EDITED: Your consumption for just hot water heating appears to be average on the new meter. There's something wrong with the old meter readings. How on earth could you only use 134kWhr of gas in the period 24 Jun 18 - 8 Sep 18?

Which leads me to my next question of how you are getting these figures for year to year comparisons when the bills are not always issued on the same dates every year?

It isn't beyond the realms of possibilty that they only used 134kWh of gas.

Just looked at our useage from 18 June to yesterday and we have used 178kWh of gas and we have not been shy with using the gas hob and the combi boiler when needed.

From what the OP has said, I don't think they have a combi, unless I've misunderstood. And a boiler with a permanent pilot light is presumably quite old.
  • 178kwh of Gas for 3 months? Impressive!

We've actually used 669kwh of Gas in that period.

we have a Warm Air system, quite old, but serviced annually by BG

I used to have warm air heating by gas that had two pilot lights that consumed 8 kWh a day. heating 5 kWh and hot water 3 kWh a day.

I was using anywhere between 24,000 kWh and 18,000 kWh of gas a year depending on the weather.

For hot water and cooking with the heating pilot light out it was 16 kWh a day.

I replaced it with a combi and radiators 4 years ago and the most gas I have ever used in a year since then is 14,350 kWh.

I used to love my warm air heating, almost instant heat when I wanted it but compared to a combi and radiators very expensive to run.

Now for hot water with my combi and cooking I use about 11 kWh a day though it varies from day to day according to my smart meter display though that is what my spreadsheet averages it out as.

I used 971 kWh from 5th June to 4th Sept

Yes. Our gas bills in this new build house are so far a fraction of what we were paying in the old smaller house. Electric consumption is much the same as expected but the gas bills are tiny so far.

Looking forward to winter this year:j:j:j

  • Interesting. I'm not sure what that graph is showing? It appears to show that you start off using very little Gas in June, perhaps 10kwh?
Bearing in mind at least up here in the north, it was still a bit chilly!

Then in July, when it was warmer, your usage appears to quadruple to circa 50kwh?

Then again in August which has been quite hot, you have used double the amount of the previous month, at 95kwh?

I would ignore the June reading as that was when we were switching suppliers so it isn't a full months reading.

The August reading is a bit skewed because we were having work done to the shower in the en suite so were having baths for a few nights each instead of our usual shower.

The July reading is probably what will be a typical summer months use for us.
  • May i ask if your shower is electric? And, do you have a dishwasher?
