Should I sell the things I love?

Options
If you needed the money, not necessarily a life or death situation, but say you needed to raise some cash for a month or so to get you over that expensive christmas period, would you sell the things you love?

Im not talking children or pets here(!), more material possessions you may not use as much as you like. They are your hobbies but you would play with them more if you had the space, more funds, bigger house so the neighbors couldn't hear (cough drum kit :D) etc. You love them, but they collect dust waiting for the day when you can throw money at them and enjoy them for what they are worth.

I have estimated I could get about £800 for two items I can no longer use due to space and cost issues, but they would leave a huge whole in my heart if they went. But the money would help immensely, but only for the short term to get me out of a trough.

So would you sell your precious things or should everyone have a dream even if you own that dream, but cant play with it cos the neighbors would kill you!!:p

  • I want to know what this "dream" is? It sounds interesting is it would annoy the neighbours! Lol.

I would personally not sell something I love, especially if it was inherited or I save dup long and hard for it.
  • I couldn't sell something that meant a lot to me.

Its nothing that exciting!! I just play the drums and have had the same kit since I was 14 which I saved up to buy and is brilliant! I love it so much, but my new flat has enough room for one bed, one sofa, one tv and thats it! My drums are just sat in a pile and not doing much. I could do with the money but long for the day when I can play them properly again!!

I also love classic cars and have an old 1971 beetle that I have been slowly restoring for nearly 10 years. The last year though its sat in my mums garage due to no funds. I could easily sell parts of it for some large money, but it would break my heart and I would probably never be able to get the parts again without spending a lot more than I paid originally!

I realise these are hardly dreams, but they provide me with pleasure that, although I not getting now, one day I hope I will!!
  • You saved up for it though. Although it may not seem like much to some, I think, if it means alot to you, even though you cant play with them it would be bad to get rid of them.

It could be a false economy. If you get rid of them, or parts of them, then you may pay more getting them parts back later.
  • No, you would regret it in the end. I need money for christmas and I am using cashback sites and selling on ebay etc and making savings by budgeting shopping and being very careful with gas and electric.
I have some Clash records which are very dear to me and althogh I have been tempted to sell them as they are going up in price, I just can't bring myself to sell them as I know I'll regret not having them.
Maybe if it was a really desperate situation and I could see I could get a good price for them, I might consider it. But just to raise a bit of cash for christmes, no. I know if I had the cash I'd waste it buying unesesscery items that really, we don't need.
By this time next year we'll be millionaires......
Personal challenge- Make an extra£5 a day for May from may 6th....and not spend it!
  • Take a photo, sell it and move on, otherwise when you can afford a house with a garage there will be no room for the car :)

Keep them! You defiinately want them. Things will turn around, they always do, and you would regret selling them then. If you have loads of cds etc, sell them if you use mp3 etc now, that's what I did. SOmetimes I paid £25 for a cd but they were not played has I had all the tracks I loved on my ipod, so I flogged them. As I result I no longer by cd's, so I waste a lot less money as most of my wages went on them at one point, but I view them as a waste of money now. I just borrow them from friends who have money to waste:rotfl:

    Cheers guys!

I realise I would regret selling them, just for a bit of help with christmas. Its interesting to hear other peoples views on the subject. I am not in debt at the minute and hate owing people money. These last few months since moving into my new flat I have ended up with about £20 left in my bank account, and all the money I put away in my savings at the beginning of the month, I take out in the last few weeks of the month!! I can see chritsmas as a big expense. Looks like all my friends will just have to do with cheapo presents this year? How much is coal these days?!!!:D:D

I have already peddalled everything of value I owned, that I didn't want, on ebay over the last few years. I have quite a few CD's, but haven't bought CD's in years so they are all very old and not exactly classics!! I doubt anyone would buy them at all!! I also have loads of DVDS that I bought but again, I'm sure no one would buy them. Or am I being naive?!

    Cheers again!
  • Keep them, I think you will regret it.
  • Sounds like you have to compromise whatever you choose to do. You say the money is not life or death, if I were you I'd remember the old adage, act in haste, repent at leisure! These items have an important place in your heart, could you really bear to let them go?
