Loft insulation

We have a 1960's detached bungalow and need to improve the insulation in the loft.
Q1, what's the best type to go for, I would like to be as eco friendly as possible but cost is a factor?
Q2, we have downlighters in the kitchen and bathroom; is it safe to cover electrical gubbins with insulation?
Q3, is it worth having insulated boards fitted?
Advice appreciated, thanks.

A1 - Fibreglass is both cheap and readily available. Some will say use sheeps wool, but it is likely to be a food source for small moths.
A2 - Intumescent covers will stop the spread of fire through the holes. Fit LED lamps and you'll reduce the amount of heat generated.
A3 - Just insulate the loft, and you'll not need any additional boards.
A4 - Take the opportunity to board out the loft space. Use stilts and dummy joists to lift the boards above the insulation.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

During the summer, Wickes have offers of 3 for 2 on insulation and on boards, so it might be worth waiting until then. Look for bargains. If you do board the loft, make sure there's a ventilation gap under the boards. A bit expensive but I used the loftzone floor kit.0
