Standing Order - Santander

Hi everyone! First post to bear with me...

I have an account with Santander which my flatmates pay into monthly to cover our communal bills - ideally I would like all payments to come into the account on the 1st of each month. However, one flatmate (also with Santander) is unable to have the transfer execute on the 1st of the month when it is a weekend (like today Sunday 1st September).

Does anyone know a way around this? This isn't an issue from other banks, I'm basically looking for a way to ensure all payments are present in the bills account on the 1st of each month.

Thanks!

  • Have them do the transfer for a few days earlier?

The only bank I'm aware of that sends SOs on a non working day is Tesco. If the other flatmates aren't with Tesco who are they with please?
  • Have them send it earlier.
Failing that it will go over the next available working day anyway so it shouldn’t be an issue.
  • Hi,

it'll probably be in by tomorrow morning, before you get up.

Yorkshire (and presumably Clydesdale) send SOs due on a non-working day on the previous working day. Very annoying, and sometimes scary, when you see a much reduced balance, because, of course, the balancing SO doesn't happen until after the weekend.
I suppose it's useful for making sure real bills are paid on time.

Flatmate could set the date of the standing order a day early.

Flatmate could make the payment manually.

    Flatmate could use another account.

You could simply accept that the flatmate's payment will be a day late a couple of times a year.

Standing orders can be amended and it's easy to find out when the 1st will fall on a Sunday. Flatmate could amend standing order to pay out early when the 1st will fall on a Sunday; then amend it back to the 1st afterwards. Or not, if it's February and not a leap year.

What would I do? If it was that important I'd set an alarm on my phone for the 1st of the month and make the payment manually.

Santander usually begins processing payments at about 10.30pm on Sunday.

I have a standing order that's due to be paid out on the 2nd. It's already gone, but it's still the 1st. Santander has dated the payment the 2nd, but it hit the receiving account on the 1st.

There's a pretty good chance flatmate's payment did reach OP's account on 1st, even if it isn't dated as such. :)

YB have a very early close of business (10:30pm if memory serves), which can give the 'appearance' of a previous day send. To balance this out, at the same time they show BACS Direct Credits due after the weekend at the same time on a Friday evening. Was the case when my salary was paid there, and still is for my Father's pension and bills...every weekend he gets cash from an ATM then asks me why his balance is wrong!

But I'm interested to hear from the OP who their flatmates bank with, unless they're mistaken in their assertion.
