PPI complaint - Black Horse

I received a letter yesterday from Black Horse telling me that although they’d previously told me that they couldn’t find a policy for me when I’d asked about PPI, they had now found that I did in fact have PPI on an account. They would now be dealing with this as a complaint. My issue is, though, that I’ve never contacted Black Horse (or any other company) about PPI. Is this therefore a scam?

Call BH making sure to use a contact number you get on the web (not in the letter) and use the reference number that should be in the letter to confirm this is genuine.0

However, if the letter mentions upfront solicitor's fees (or any other kind of advance payment) then it is indeed a scam and you should ignore any such instruction.0 -
I also got a similar letter from black horse around a week ago, I have previously tried the re-claim the PPI which I didn't know existed but Black horse said that there was no PPI, I assume they are now admitting having sold it knowing that people would not have time to reclaim before the deadline. I guess I have lost my chance to claim it back now.0

That would be an incorrect assumption, as you said you had already made a complaint. Therefore the deadline doesn't apply.0 -

That is an incorrect assumption and wrong guess.
Black Horse were able to recover a lot of long archived data that was no on computer systems and they are going through that and seeing if people had previously complained. They are automatically reopening complaints of those that did. The deadline doesn't have any relevance.0 -
thank you, I didnt know this, I will contact them asap0

OP - a similar thing happened to me just last week with regards to a company called NRAM.
Out of the blue a company called NRAM wrote to me saying that I had a mortgage with Northern Rock and that I had been charged a fee and that I was incorrectly charged interest. So they will be refunding me £3.28 and a further £4.71 which represents 8% simple interest (words to this effect).
The mortgage was held between 2003 and 2005 and I barely remember it. Nonetheless a cheque turned up last week for £7.99 and I banked it.0 -

That is different to PPI, there was a general directive to all mortgage lenders last year, some of whom were apparently charging interest incorrectly, to proactively go back through their records and refund anyone who was mischarged.
Not the same as the OPs PPI.0 -

Thankyou for explaining this, really appreciated.
With all this PPI reclaiming I just assumed it was to do with this, and therefore they sent me the cheque just before the cut of date.0
