Universal Credit Help

Hi everyone,
I finished up work on Wednesday 31st July which was also my last pay date (I was paid on the last Wednesday of the month in my job.) I can see my assessment period was 31st July - 30th August and I'd be notified on the 30th August how much I would be paid on 6th September. I logged in and it said my payment this month is £0. It says further down about my total take-home pay for this period then my salary but that was for the month of July, I haven't worked in August. I'm single so it'll just be the standard amount but I'm in a panic that I'm getting nothing! Can anyone help with what's happening?
Thanks

As received your wages during your AP then this will have reduced your UC payment to zero and you won't receive any money this month. Had you started your UC claim after you received your wages then this wouldn't have happened.
  • So basically I have to live off one wage until 6th October then?

That's correct. UC is paid in arrears and you received your wages during your AP. As your UC payment is zero your claim will have now closed. You'll need to log in to your account to confirm the details you gave previously are correct and then you'll keep to the same AP and payment dates.
  • Thanks for the help. I was asked my last day of work which was 31st July and my pay date. So I was paid £1200 and that's to get me through until October. No one said I should have made it be 1st August. Thanks for the advice.

It would have been better if you had waited to make the Uc claim until your last pay had been paid, then it wouldn't have counted.

You can request an advance but this reduces future payments.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

It would be good if DWP advised people of this. Lots are caught out this way.

  • Thanks for all the help. I had put in my claim that evening when I finished, it asked my last day of work which I put down as 31st July as that's when it was. Like you've said, I'd have put 1st August if I'd known this and I didn't realise it gets paid in arrears. They've now closed my claim and I'd need to redo it for this period now.

That wouldn't have worked because you claimed on 31st and you can't put a future date.
