Sink plug issues

We've recently had one of the kids or a guest play with the plug on our bathroom sink. Before this issue it was fixed in place (didn't lift out) and worked well as a push to pop in and out. Now it's out and when trying to fix it, it either goes in and doesn't click down in place or goes down and stays down.
I can't see any markings with a model number on it but the brand when we purchased was Highlife.
Does anyone have any thoughts how we get the plug back in place? It's not the worst thing but pretty annoying. I've attached some photos.

Your second photo shows the mechanism that pops the plug up has detached from it's fixing. The part still in the centre of the plughole should screw out. Maybe the two parts can be put back together (possibly by loosening the grub screw, and pushing together before re-tightening).
You should be able to unscrew the fixing by hand but may need to carefully use a pair of pliers or mole wrench to get better purchase.0 -
Viewing an enlarged version of image 2 it looks like the bayonet attachment on the plug has been snapped so it will no longer lock onto the screw sticking out of the captive section. Plumber's merchant will be the best place to try to source a replacement.0

I'm presuming a small rubber ball has been tried & found ineffective in the short term? (Godfather's dog most miffed when number four toy removed from use until godfather could take metal mushroom to appropriate store.)0
