Promotion Advice

Hello everyone,

I need some non biased advice regarding a promotion.

I've worked with my company for 7 years - starting as a Christmas temp and progressing my way up. Those 7 years have been challenging for me as I've been overlooked many many times but never gave up hope that I'll get management someday.

I've now finally been offered the promotion I have been working blood, sweat and tears for... I have worked so hard and with so much passion, never gave up and continued to pursue this goal of mine and it's finally here!

The only issue is - the company is struggling financially and I've been offered redundancy in the new year (2020) or I can move to another store for this promotion. The money isn't fantastic but it's much more than I'm currently on but my store manager seems to think I'm making the wrong move if I take the promotion/salary because it's "too low" in her opinion. She's also said that this company isn't "worth it" anymore etc etc... she also know how hard I've work and my struggles along the way - I've never wanted anything more - I obviously don't expect to stay with the company for another 7 years but I'm confident a management title will open lots of doors for me. I also don't ever want to regret this and walk away knowing "I was almost there"...

Any advice or opinions?

  • I agree with you, your manager is probably a little jaded and cynical. However, if you take the role and the company goes down then you will still get redundancy at that point with a nice management title to put on your job hunting CV. You can't really lose by taking the role.

    Well done and good luck!

If any extra travelling doesn't have much of an impact, seems almost a no-brainer going by what you've said. Perhaps business picks up, and you do stay another years; great, you've had 7 years at what you had been aiming for during the previous 7. Perhaps it doesn't, and redundancy proves just delayed; well, now it's against much higher pay, and you have the title and experience to put on your CV when looking for another job.
but my store manager seems to think I'm making the wrong move if I take the promotion/salary because it's "too low" in her opinion. She's also said that this company isn't "worth it" anymore etc etc...

This could imply the store manager is subject either to redundancy or a redeployment on poorer terms, and feeling bitter about it, i.e. the reaction is much more about her own situation than yours. If the salary you are being offered is notably lower than her current one, so what, it's a lot more than what you are currently on, and could prove a stepping stone anyway.

A lot of managers, even very nice and friendly ones who mean well, have this deep seated anxiety about people they manage moving up. When it comes to promotions, I've always found it better to go with your instinct, and ignore the advice of your managers.

The salary is much more than you are currently on. That probably means its also the best offer you are going to get anywhere. And this is what you've worked for, and its what you want.

    Just go for it.

Even if she is right that it is not the best company to work for anymore, or a low salary for the job, it sounds like a good and useful stepping stone for you. Well done!

The wage will be low, it is your fist management position.

I would take the pay rise and promotion every day of the week. It is more money than you currently earn but more importantly it will make it easier to get another management position elsewhere in the future having already held the position.

  • You have all been so helpful and I am so grateful for all the advice.

I’ve honestly worked so hard, I’ve even cried at times when I thought I was never going to get management. I know deep down I’ll put all my heart and soul into being the best manager ever and I’ll appreciate the experience regardless of whatever happens to the company in the future.

    Thank you!

I agree with previous comments about the manager seeming to be jaded, and probably feeling pretty negative about their own situation. It's possible they haven't been offered the chance to move.
I also agree with the comments about possible upturn in company fortunes, and that having management experience on your CV, should the company close, can only be positives.

You manager may not want to lose you. It sounds as though you are someone who likely makes her job much easier and she may well be putting her needs, and what would work best for her, first. You should do the same, and make your decision based on what is best for you.

And if she is right and the company is in difficulties, then better to be made redundant later, as a manager on a higher wage, than now. As long as it is the same company the promotion should not affect your continuity of employment ,so I don't see what the benefit would be to you in turning down the promotion.

If you take the promotion, you will then be in a stronger position to apply for management roles elsewhere if you want to.

How old are you? Also being a Manager in the early days is all about learning from mistakes made and realising all staff are different.

Here’s what you wrote in your OP.

“I've now finally been offered the promotion I have been working blood, sweat and tears for... I have worked so hard and with so much passion, never gave up and continued to pursue this goal of mine and it's finally here! “

It really says it all, you’ve worked hard and your dream is in sight. Take the promotion and make the most of it and above all enjoy it. :D you deserve it.

If your firm ultimately fails you’ll be job hunting at a higher level

I’m sure everyone on here will join me in wishing you the very best of luck
