  • Need2bthrifty - are your jackets similar in taste and texture to oven baked ones, please? :)

Taste is fine for me but they do go a bit darker than oven baked and if you like a crispy skin they need drying out and crisping up in a hot oven.

  • Thanks for the reply need2b. :)

doing it my way - it doesn't make brown, crispy skin but the taste of the meat it lovely and its so tender.
I love cooking ours on halved lemons with the zest grated over the skin with thyme. I put garlic cloves, around 4 or 5, inside the cavity. The juices are so good made into a gravy.

Hi everyone it's been a manic week getting the kids back to school so just managing to pop back on now. I'm only half way through all the comments and recipes so will try and catch up with everyone else soon.

I have had sausage casserole in mine yesterday. Is a favourite as I chop the potatoes in and add a tin of baked beans for the kids so they love it! I have carrot, celery, & onion in too. A whole meal in one dish and no extra faff on... Going to have pulled pork tomorrow:D

Cheerfulness - That doesn't sound too gross, I was expecting it to be messier! I was worried it would be a bit of a faff but sounds simple, I will give it a try!
For the jackets it really easy, just !!!!! with a fork, add salt and some oil & wrap in foil. 4-6 hours on high and they are fine. I try to do a few together and if the oven is on I'll pop them in for the last 10 mins to crisp or you can put under the grill if you want. They are fine as they are tho I find. I did read about someone who would 'batch cook' this way and freeze them, but I have not tried it.
The Chinese port sounds lovely! I buy steam veg bags as a stand by for when I'm doing the kids tea as it's great and like you say, no waste. :money:

YorksLass - that sounds nice, I will give it a try as the kids & DH love rice pudding! I have never liked it, it sounds so nice and I keep trying it but never change my mind?

Muvvahen - I have never made yoghurt either but it sounds a great way to do it. I know some people have made bread in the SC too ... not sure if that would work well ....

Chris - I put the whole chicken in a bit of a home made tinfoil sling, breast down and leave on low all day. It literally falls apart. I usually sit it on some onions and carrots just so it's not squashed down but you don't have to I've seen people scrunch tinfoil into balls to sit it on. I don't put any liquid in at all. Is easily the best chicken & gravy! The jackets I've explained above to cheerfulness! They are really easy. You can do so much with the SC so loads to try out!

Maddiemay ooh I hadn't seen! Love all the SC recipes again! It must be because it's turning into that time of year again when everyone wants warm food.

Misssaveapenny I find soups are great in the SC and you can make loads of varieties. I make sweet potato & spinach curry in mine. I freeze it and then add meat if we have left over chicken but is beautiful on its own to be honest. Sorry I'm not one for measurements when I'm cooking but I find the SC is like that took and just likes things chucked in to it!

    2 x medium sweet potatoes
    1 x Onion
    Garlic
    Mushroom
    Spinach
Stock - less is more in the SC so add more as you go along if you feel it's dry but remember liquid does not evaporate like it does in a pan (I use chicken but vegetable will be fine)
Turmeric - mild curry powder - Garam masala - paprika sorry I don't measure spices I just chuck in when I feel like, start off with less tho as you can always add more!

Chuck everything into the SC apart from the mushrooms and spinach.

At the last hour mash with a potato masher to thicken and add mushrooms and spinach.

Standingstones that sounds lovely - we don't have a Waitrose here but wonder if I could get beef cheeks from a butcher. It is a long recipe but looks totally worth it!

Whm :T that's a great idea for porridge using a timer. My SC is a billy basic one o no built in timer or anything fancy but never thought about a SM timer to set the porridge off for the cold mornings.

As said earlier in the thread tonight's dinner will be whole chicken sitting on halved onions - one red, one white. Am going to do roast potatoes, onions, carrots, peppers and some green veg for a more colourful plate.

Have used the "foil sling" mentioned by Tinks - not done that before, usually try and lift it out with a couple of fish slices!

I haven't posted on here before, but 3.31AM Tink!
    Are you on night shift?

My sc has bones and a carrot and onion in at the moment to make some chicken stock. I've never done it before so I'll see how it goes and let you know.

We had a joint of beef in ours yesterday and it was so beautiful when cooked, proper melt in the mouth with the bonus that our kitchen smelt wonderful all day :rotfl:. I do love my slow cooker.

Cooked a chicken in mine yesterday. Had as part of a roast yesterday. Using some more today to make a Spanish rice and will use some for a chicken curry. Any bits LO will go into the freezer to be added to soup at some stage.

Nothing else in there for a while.

  • Have cut n pasted sweet potato and spinch soup thanks, not really overkeen on either of them but do like to try different things and it is the soup season, I usually use SMaker but am happy to use SC. My SC is just a small old one but does the job, also have a slightly larger one for when I want to cook a joint. It also has SM timer and is on top of freezer in utility area with BM.
  • I have a lamb, spinach and potato curry simmering away in mine, Just the lamb, sauce and potatoes in the pot at the moment. I'll add the spinach 40 minutes before I'm ready to dish up.
  • I slow cooked 6 ox cheeks (which had been marinated in a bottle of beer for 24 hours) in my slow cooker on Sunday night and then let them steep in their juices all day. Whizzed up the sauces to make a nice gravy and served with mash and carrots!!

I gave two away, two were eaten and two are in my freezer for another time. I don't normally like the food I cook but they were delicious!
