Inheritance vs ESA, PiP and HB

Hi there. I don't know what to do. I'm due inheritance from my late mother who lived in South Africa. I do not plan to go to South Africa as my home is here in Wales. Not sure how much as estate still being worked on for split between four. I had a brain haemorrhage and was medically retired. I receive ESA, PiP and housing/tax support. I'm really worried that all of these supports will stop being awarded to me. Help please? Thanks in advance Sue

If the inheritance is £16,000 or more then your housing benefit and council tax reduction will stop.

Are you receiving Contributions based ESA or Income Related? If it's income related then all your ESA will also stop.

PIP will continue because it's not means tested.

As soon as the money goes into your bank you need to report the changes.

Until you know the actual amount it's impossible to say how it might affect Income Related benefits. PIP will not be affected, HB may be, and ESA will be affected if it is not entirely Contributions based.
Do you have any idea how big the inheritance is likely to be?
  • Thanks so much for reply. Seems that with the ZAR vs £ the amount I'll be receiving is around £10k. I'll be reporting this as and when all is finalised.
  • Depends on ex rate but probably about £10k. Thanks so much for advice
  • I'm in the 'support group' and have housing and tax reductions. Amount in the region of £10k and will report when finalised. Thanks for advice

If it’s £10,000 and you do not already have savings your benefits will not end but will be reduced. The first £6,000 of savings are ignored. Above this for Income based ESA there is a reduction of £1/week for every £250 or part thereof. So £10,000 gives a reduction £16/week. HB and CTR will reduce also. Your CTR may end because different local authorities have different capital rules.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

As long as the OP has an income based ESA claim then this will 'passport' them to maximum housing benefit for their circumstances.

CTR may reduce according to the local council's regulations.

Of course. Should have said HB may reduce (if OP ended up contributions button based rather than income based ESA).
