Need to leave OVO
Hi everyone,
Just wondering whether anyone knows if I can switch to another energy provider and get a new smart meter fitted.
I am currently with OVO and have a 1st gen smart meter and I haven't been able to switch for years as it's not compatible with other energy providers other than utilita apparently.
I would like to know if I rang a company like British gas for example and asked if I could switch to them if they would install a new smart meter free of charge considering I already have one.
I am desperate to leave OVO as I feel their prices are too high and I need to be on PAYG, I can't afford to pay monthly.
Thanks

Why not ring them and find out? But you can ALWAYS switch whatever your meter, even if it's a spinning disc for electricity and a rotating pointer type for gas. You just have to read the meter yourself if it goes dumb and you want accurate bills.
PAYG will cost you more. You'd be better off reading a credit meter each day and setting strict equivalent limits on your consumption (and monitoring your DD balance).
Avoid any electric heating and instantaneous electric showers if possible, it'll cost you an arm and a leg.0 -
Of course you can switch away from Ovo
If it's a SMETS 1 meter, although they generally say they aren't compatible with other suppliers, some other suppliers can connect to them.
If the supplier you switched to cant do this then the meter will just operate as a traditional dumb meter until its exchanged for a smart meter.0 -

This user essentially asked the same question 2 years ago, and appears to have igniored the advice provided then.
Thanks to Robin9 (post#6 below) for bringing this to all our attention :T0 -

"OVO still say on their website that their meters will remain smart if you switch to E.On, First Utility, or Utilita.
If you are considering moving to one of these suppliers, then give them a call and ask them.
