Sainsburys out of date pie

We went shopping in Sainsburys on Friday and bought, amongst other things - a steak and kidney pie - sell by date 29/08

ie) past the sell by date.
We only realised today when it was a planned meal !

This would not be the first time that this has happened in Sainsburys - in fact - earlier in the same visit, my wife pointed out to a staff member, a pack of prepacked ham that was 2 days past its sell by date !

Thursday was the 29/08. Perhaps it should have been reduced though.

Ah, you've edited that. It said Thursday originally!

You've obviously had previous experience of this happening before so in future, take more care and look at what you're buying?

Don't worry! Sainsburys do not have a monopoly on out of date food.

You can go to Tesco, Morrison or Lidl and at some point in time will find out of date food. Some retailers also now sell off items past their best before date at much reduced prices
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

The only date on food that has any significant legal meaning is "use by", it is a criminal offence to sell food beyond that date. It is perfectly legal to sell food beyond the "sell by", "display until" and "best before" dates. I would have expected a fresh meat pie to have a "use by" date though.

Contact Environmental Health (part of your local council) and they will send someone round to have words with the store manager.

You should have checked the date at time of purchase - If you brought it yesterday it would have been OK to have yesterdays date on it so would still have been out of date today.

if you are checking the dates on ham why didnt you check the date on the pie?
I always check dates on fresh food.

As other posters. It's pretty simple to look at the date before buying it. I check any fresh/refrigerated food for the expiry date before putting it in my trolley. Often dig around the back of the shelf to make sure i get the fresher stuff that they always put behind the oldest items.

Besides, it's extremely unlikely to kill you, or even give you an upset tummy. I'd imagine there must be a safety margin built into 'use-by dates' because no food retailer is going to want to chance food poisoning by there being even a slim chance that food would be poisonous one day after sale.

I regularly 'chance' a use-by date by up to 2-3 days on multiple food types (I draw the line at more than 3 days), not had any food poisoning yet in 25 years of doing this.

    ^^^ exactly ^^^

Food rarely goes bad once the clock strikes midnight.
It is usually quite obvious when food is no longer good to eat.
Look and smell are your best senses.

Of course if your in doubt take it back and swap it.
