Replacing misted double glazing units, u-values.

Hi,

I've have misted up double glazing for the last couple of years and it's time to change them, not only because they look awful but also they are not longer energy efficient.

So, I've have a few quotes for 11 units:
online:
£450 for units that achieve u-value of 1.0
£350 for u-value of 1.2
A few local quotes for
£315, unknown u-value
£325 for u-value of 1.4

I would normally go for the most energy efficient in cases like this as windows rarely get replaced.
However, I don't think my home is well insulated, so my question is would getting the most energy efficient window be a waste of money and should I just go for the cheaper options?

Thanks in advance.

Having better U values for your DG units will make virtually no difference to your energy efficiency. You need to look at the overall structure of the house. The biggest areas of structure are the walls and roof so this is where you need to concentrate your energy efficient measures. Another couple of inches of loft insulation will have a far more beneficial effect on your energy bills than DG.

However, if there is only a few pounds difference, it would be better to go for the most energy efficient.

There's no point using the best U value sealed units in frames which may not be energy efficient or in a home which is not equally well-insulated.

From your list personally I would probably be opting for the £350 option because, over 11 units, the price difference is negligible.
  • Hi,

you can DIY, measure and then get your glass from local supplier, save £££s.

Thanks for the replies, I thought that may have been the case.

Topped up the loft insulation a couple of years ago and added a slabs of insulation boards but there are poorly insulated parts in the flat roof and the dormer window walls (only 70mm thick)

Yes, it is indeed a very easy thing to do DIY, if you make sure you get your measurements correct.

    Thanks

I am planning on fitting myself, seems easy enough, managed to get the seals out no problem. The prices in my opening post were for the glass units only. I measured them once, twice and thrice to make sure I made no mistake in measurements.
