London is running out of numbers again.
In addition to the current (020) 3xxx xxxx, (020) 7xxx xxxx and (020) 8xxx xxxx ranges, new numbers starting (020) 4xxx xxxx will begin to be allocated from 1 October 2019 and start to come into use before the end of the year.

020 7 are (should be) central London and Docklands. 020 8 are outer London. 020 3 can be anywhere in London. I suppose 020 4 will be anywhere in London, too.
I just hope there will be no changes for existing numbers. Since moving here, our landline number - same phone, same address - has been:
- 01 xxx xxxx
- 081 xxx xxxx
- 0181 xxx xxxx
- 020 8xxx xxxx

At the point of the changeover in 2001, all (020) 7xxx numbers were in central London and all (020) 8xxx numbers were in outer London. However, any subranges within those ranges allocated since then can be anywhere in London. There is now no inner or outer zone. London has a single area code - 020.
Numbers starting (020) 3xxx can be anywhere in London and this will also be the case for numbers starting (020) 4xxx. There will be no number changes, this merely introduces a new block of numbers within the existing 020 area code.
Numbers starting (020) 2xxx, (020) 5xxx, (020) 6xxx and (020) 9xxx remain available for future expansion.0
