Cancel Gym contract

My Grandson is joining the navy in early November and I wanted him to get fit before he starts his training.

I took out a 3 month contract at a fee of £78 with a local gym.

As soon as I had signed the card payment that was it, no explaining what he had to do. Nothing !!

He decided to go last week, when he got there and asked what he should do he was just told to go through ‘that door’

No one on the other side of the door helped him to get his bearings. He asked if he could get water and was pointed in one direction, when he found the machine it was empty.!

He was then told to go to the caf! which he eventually found only for it to be closed.

I was never advised that there could be an induction for him

I’m very disappointed with how he’s been treated by the club.

I've emailed customer service and they tell me that I can't get the payment refunded.

Do I have any rights with this

Advice would be appreciated

In all the gyms I have been in.
Induction is available (but optional) and requires booking/requesting.
You signed up for 3 months. When you singed up,why didnt you ask?
You were signing up for someone else,so I expect the gym would expect the member to be enquiring about inductions.
No doubt this info will be on their website.

hes joining the Navy,so not exactly a kid.
Get him to get an induction and he will be fine.
Top tip, always arrive at the gym with water in case theres issues with the fountains.

Sorry I'm not sure what you expect? I'm sure one of the staff would gladly show him around if he asked nicely. He should also be able to book an induction if he isn't familiar with how to use the equipment.

What else did you expect the gym to provide? A free personal trainer?

Most gyms are very bad value unless you go at least twice a week for your entire contract.

Gyms can be intimidating. Hes a young lad and it will (seem to) be full of hot women and silverback guys.
He likely got a bit overwhelmed.
Induction will help. If its short term, maybe even consider investing in some personal trainer sessions to keep him going in a good direction.

    Thanks custardly.
I've got him in to a smaller gym. There is a personal trainer that will give him a workout just before he goes for a taster week, he goes to HMS Raleigh in November so hopefully he'll be fit as it's a hard 10 weeks.

    I'm a very proud grandma.
  • Good for him and good for you!
