Rats keep eating my Slug Pallets!!!

Hi,

I have veg growing in the garden and noticed a few days ago that Slugs were eating my hard work.

So i put down some Slug Pallets.

The following day noticed they were all gone, confused i added a little more.

Yesterday, i saw a rat in he garden.

So i now suspect its Rats that are eating the Slug Pallets.

Are they not poisonous to Rats?

probably but rats are tough old things and like hedgehogs are mammals, so no doubt in the long run it''ll kill them, just not as quickly as they kill slugs

That's why I never use slug pellets. My cats are not the brightest of creatures, and I'm sure they would think I'd put the pellets down for them!

If they are the new ferric whatsit type, instead of the old, now banned metaldehyde, you'll just be pumping them full of iron.

The old adage, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" comes to mind! :rotfl:

Time to get the air rifle out.
  • I found this on the RSPB website https://community.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/homesforwildlife/f/greenfingers/111067/slug-pellets but I'm not sure I totally buy into it.

Not a bad year for slugs this year for me. I even stopped bothering with nematodes. My punji stick approach was also observed to work by Mrs Un, which was a bonus. There's a photo elsewhere on the gardening forum, but I generally use a combination of garden cane & last years raspberry cane 18" to approx 4-5' to form a barrier which not only supports plants, but protects against pigeons, badgers, cats & footballs while allowing small birds & mammals in to eat the slugs & caterpillars

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Not sure I buy into it either, but I've never used pellets. Only picking or nematodes. I tried a DIY slug pub once but forgot to empty it, and ended up with something very very nasty indeed

Yes, this is where the outside toilet comes in useful. My local pub is the source of slops and I install a number of bars around the raised beds. Make sure the bars are a little bit away from the dining tables..

Picking them up late at night with a torch is great for my reputation as a mad lady..
  • I need to send a message to the ‘Rat community’ in the area, that digging up my seeds will NOT be tolerated.

So i have ordered some new Rat Poison, let’s see if that does the trick :)

The Bait box is doing e** all obviously, It’s been sat out all summer and they are still alive.

    This is not investment advice.
Your money may go "down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... down and up and down and up and down and up and down ... I got all tricked up and came up to this thing, lookin' so fire hot, a twenty out of ten..."
