Broken keyboard port?

I've just put a new motherboard etc together. Ps/2 keyboard is plugged in, num / scroll / caps lock led's light up when I boot the pc, but the keyboard does not respond when I'm at the boot menu.

The keyboard worked fine on the old pc.

If the port was broken though, wouldn't the thing fail altogether, rather than teasing me with the lights on start up?

Could it just be incompatible (but I don't see how)?

  • If you can't fix it why not use a USB keyboard?

    Thanks.

Phil - pins seem straight, and kb was working earlier.

Dave - I'm considering a new keyboard, or a usb adaptor. The board is brand new, but getting it changed would be a hassle if the only thing wrong is the ps/2 port and I can manage with a usb connection instead.
  • like said above get a usb keyboard, £5 and your sorted

Try another keyboard and enter the BIOS and look for legacy mouse/keyboard settings and try changing its state.

But normally that only affects USB devices.
  • I did have a similar problem when I changed PC's after a damaged system, the old keyboard didnt work with the new system & after no ammount of messing couldnt understand why...I'd suggest what everyone else says, if you dont want to dump the keyboard you could try a ps2 to usb converter only a few pence from any pc shop

Would do, but without the keyboard I can't get into the BIOS.

Right, this is odder still now.

Both a USB and Ps/2 keyboard work, or not, the same way.

Holding down tab while booting gets me to the post screen. No key presses work after that - f12 won't go boot menu, del won't go to bios set up. Only the tab key works to get me into post, but the other keys won't get me into bios etc even when held down while booting.

    Any ideas, anyone?
