Shelf advice

Hi,
I'm putting a new bathroom in which looks much like the picture below. The wooden shelf sat above the toilet and basin is our last purchase and I would really appreciate some advice.
I'm not sure where to buy from or what type of wood and treatment is required for the job. Any suggestions please?

It's oak, but I'd choose a laminate as there are some great ones these days that really look the part.
...unless you are genuinely prepared to sand the oak back and oil it every 6 months or so.
Wood and lots of water don't mix amazingly well if that wood isn't protected.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Ah great, can I get a laminate that would be as thick as that? Also if you would have any ideas of shops to look in for it would be ideal. I definitely don't fancy oiling it every 6 months!0

I'd start by looking at the standard places - B&Q, Homebase, Wickes, Jewsons, Travis Perkins etc. Odds on they'll have chunks of wood / laminate in all shapes and sizes they can sell you. Another option might be if you have any timber merchants near you (likely to be located on an industrial estate somewhere). I've often found such places to be very helpful, and if you supply the measurements they'll likely be able to cut it to the exact size and shape you need (and seal the cut edges) for only a few quid extra.0
