Do you have a pension? is it worth considering adding to it?
Do you use your ISA allowance?

If you expect to need the money within 5 years place it in a savings account.
1. Assuming you already have
(a) An emergency fund
(b) Have or are contributing to pension and do not wish to add more.
2. Have a look at these two first:-

3. Then consider investing in a low cost global multi asset fund at a risk level you are happy with:-
Global Multi-Asset Funds
Vanguard Life Strategy
HSBC Global Strategy
L&G Multi Index Funds
Blackrock Consensus
Architas Passive
These have wide diversification while minimising risk, at low cost.

4. With investing you are putting your money at risk and you should be invested for at least 10 years.
