How long do closed accounts stay on my credit file

  • What credit worthiness are you referring to?

If you mean your score or rating then ignore it.

No one is privy to a lenders criteria for lending so it’s impossible to say.

Don't know. What I can say is that if you wanted to apply for any major credit, such as a mortgage, in the next 6-12 months, you should probably take it easy with current account applications. You could possibly use the same rule for any job application that requires a credit check.
Does the 6-12 months number come from somewhere, or is it basically 'not too close'?

It comes from memory. Another MSE poster stated 6-12 months in another thread...
I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

    I love my job

  • Too many credit searches can seem like an act of “desperation” to some lenders.

So ease up (stop) in the months leading up to and during mortgages applications.

Can they not see if the application was for a current account without an overdraft (if the account was actually opened), that I obviously wasn't doing it to get credit?
  • No they’ll just see the search and possibly the lender.
    But that’s it.

If the account was opened, they can see what the search was for, no?

You seem to have an obsession with what will show on your credit report when opening/closing accounts. Any particular reason why.....maybe it's something we can advise on.

Because I want to open and close a lot of accounts for switching offers, but I don't like taking risks with my future mortgage for a few hundred pounds. Like I said above, everyone on a money saving forum is keen to say that its not a problem, I am trying to work out if that is actually so. No-one I saw on other threads explains why they are so confident about it.
  • Well you can either take the advice being given, or, try it yourself anyway and see what happens.
