Self Employed (Should She)

Hello all,

My wife has been doing Avon now for a while and the workload is building and she is still un-employed. Is it better if she registered as self-employed or not.

Also if that is the best way to go about things then somebody tell me how she should do it.

Cheers

You dont get to choose if you should declare income or not. You are either self employed or you are commiting tax fraud. (that reads harsh but I am typing it with a smile ;) )

  • if its constant... then go self-employed, talk to an accountant about the +'s
  • Thanks.

Its not that we are trying to commit fraud.

The manager has said that she has no need to declare it as its not a constant income.

If so please explain how we go about this.

not a very fun task I am afraid. She will have to register a company on companies house and open a business bank account a lot of people I know choose Barclay's.

You do not have to pay tax until the[SIZE=-1] annual £5225 allowance is reached go on IR35calc for more info

She doesn't have register as a company [which would cost her] to be self employed or vice-versa and she doesn't have to open a business bank account - although keeping her income/expenses in a separate account is good business practice.

    Hi,
You don't say if your wife is a rep or also a Sales Leader? Either way she needs to register as self employed within 3 months of trading or she will be liable to a fine. The benefits of registering as self employed far outweigh the other option so she would be wise to do this. PM me and I will talk you through it.
  • My wife is a rep,

She was told by the manager that her income is just a discount so there is no need to declare it.

    Please re-assure me.

now my wife wont listen to me.

    Complete bull.

I was able to find Avons own information on this and this is what they say:

Earnings from selling cosmetics, make up etc should be declared on your income tax self assessment form. You may be able to offset expenses such as buying items as customer samples and the starter pack against your income tax.

  • Sorry dunstonh,

Actually that is what my wife told. Know I know where it is laid down I will sort this problem out.

Is it true that she will not pay tax until she earns £5225 though because she has not reached that yet.
