    Health hazard?

No, unless you are planning to eat the carpet. Unpleasant yes, health issue no irrespective of species that generated the urine. And yes I am medically qualified.

I had a similar problem. It had even penetrated the floorboards underneath. Google how to get rid of pet/dog urine. I got a bucket, filled it with warm water, a measure of boilogical washing liquid, a bottle of vinegar, and if you want, some bicarbonate of soda (can buy online or in boxes from Wilkinsons for £1.50ish a box) - be careful, it fizzes so large bucket needed. Soak the carpets, underlay and floorboards. Leave for a few hours. If you don't have a shampooer, use towels to soak it up. Wash them on a hot wash. Repeat if necessary.

I am afraid it is likely that a 'professional' clean may remove the stains, it is not guaranteed they will remove the smell. Even replacing the carpets won't guaranteed remove the smell if the floorboards are affected. The above method will remove the odour. Used it and it worked.

Dog urine is sterile on exit from the body normally. The smell is offensive, not a health risk. Solid matter is. Dog Fleas may be more of a problem, but don't normally bite humans. Cat fleas will (my ex is covered in flea bites after helping evicting someone with cats who left the place in a state).

I choke very badly at the smell of urine. It makes me physically sick.

Seriously? A tenant is meant to look for dog urine when checking an inventory? :rotfl:

There is a chance cleaning will get rid of dog urine smell. Cat urine- no chance, that stuff STINKS.
No one should be expected to live with either. I wonder what other corners (besides not bothering to check or clean a place after the last tennants) the landlord has cut.

I do hope its sorted for you.

I have a dog who had had multiple small "accidents" inside and its been fine. Easy to clean up. Little to no odour. But a dog repeatedly doing large wees (eg in case of urinary incontinence or houses with multiple dogs not toilet trained) will get gross quick. Our last elderly dog we had to pull up the laminate and underlay after he went. It wasnt fixable.

Of course cat urine can be cleaned up. An enzyme-based product is the most effective.

If cat urine could not be cleaned up veterinary practices, boarding catteries, humans dealing with soiled litter trays would be producing a massive amount of refuse and/ or the premises would all reek.

  • Yes I agree, have dealt with cat urine too when a cat of ours managed to hide in a room until we searched for her after more than a day (she doesn't always come back from her wanderings every day).

The concoction I mentioned above because of the enzymes in washing liquid (I tend to use Ariel) works.
