Refuse hotel hold on money

Recently when i’ve stayed at various hotels and they’ve put a £50 hold on my card, it’s taken a month for that £50 to be released. I’m finding this increasingly irritating.

Can we refuse hotels holding our money? What’s the implications? In my cases the rooms were already paid for.

I expect you could offer them cash instead.

Are you really that close to your credit limit that it makes a difference?

I'm sure you'll find in the t and c's that they can do this. If you refuse I would assume no room.
  • Refuse = no room unfortunately. :)

Of course you can refuse... then they can equally refuse you the room

I have stayed at hotels where they have said they only need my credit card details if I want to be able to charge incidental items to the room.

But unless you have a very low credit limit, or are using a debit card, I can't see why this is a problem. They are not really taking your money. Just reducing the amount available for you to draw on.

Legally, it would depend on whether you were informed and the term properly brought to your attention (not buried in small print) of the deposit, before you were bound by the contract. If not then they can't vary the terms after the fact.

However, that may not stop a hotel from refusing to give you a room.
