Brittania Building Society

Options
I hada mortgage with Brittania Building Society but when the company dealing with my PPI Claim submitted a claim they said that they can find no record of me having a mortgage. It was in 1988 and we bought under the Right to Buy Council scheme. We obviously had a mortgage and it was with them and probably had PPI. attached.

As the deadline approaches where do I go from here. as I need to act today.

Its no wonder they no longer have a record after this length of time.

    What makes you say that?
In 1988, MPPI sales (or ASU as it was called back then) was rare. There would have been a life assurance requirement as a condition of borrowing but as you stated "probability" rather than fact, its probable that you did not have PPI.

Also, a good many of these right to buy mortgages were done via mortgage brokers and advisers. Not directly with the lender. Was yours?

I cannot remember if it was a broker, I dont think it was I thought that it was direct with Council and Mortgage com. The solicitors have ceased trading and cannot help. I would have thought that Brittania would have had records that they kept. it was only 30 years ago.

They just said I didnt have a mortgage from them or they could find no record of one.

Only? The data protection act required the destruction of unnecessary records. The regulator recommends 6 years after closure.

Well if it was ONLY 30 years I presume you have kept full records and can supply them... no? Then why would they keep YOUR records longer than you have?
  • I am not a business and their filing on a computer is far more extensive than I as an OAP householder would have. I did think about asking my bank through whom the payments would have been made but feel that they will say the same after 30 years

Computer systems 30 years ago were less powerful than your modern mobile phone or television.

You are not subject to the data protection act. They are.

    That does't help you.

payments showing an amount being paid to a lender tells you only that a payment was made to the lender. it doesnt tell you anything about what insurances you had. Most insurances were monthly standalone with their own direct debit.

More than a lifetime ago for many people.

Prepare yourself for tomorrow's phone call to be both disappointing and frustrating..

    Sorry.
