No PPI claims company is best to use - regardless of the how poor they are, you simply do not have the time as they would need to send you forms for you to return and then they will send on to the banks (no time!).

Make any potential complaint direct to lender and do this immediately.

    you are too late.
There simply isnt any time to find out who they had ppi with in the incredibly unlikely event that (a) they had PPI back then and (b) there are records dating back that far and (c) you could prove it was missold.

its not banks, its catalogue companies, allders, friends united insurance, just cant find half of them.

its my mums fault, i've been on at her since last year to give me details, so she'll have to lose out.

PPI was rare in the 1980's and only began to be widely (mis) sold in the 1990's. So I would not worry too much about missing the deadline on these "claims". The fact that you cannot find the lenders either in a Google search or here at MSE would seem to support that. However, the FCA website is a great resource which you might wish to (very soon) check out.
