My Lexus has different sized tyres front and rear ...no swapping possible there. Does that make it dangerous?

    No.

You can have different sized tyres front and back, just not on the same axle.

Some cars are made with wider, possibly grippier, tyres on the back.

I would have to disagree with that point. If you lose grip at the front, you will go straight on, you will lose steering completely.
I have driven RWD cars and you can recover a loose rear end.

But generally most people have driven front wheel drives most of their life. Recovering oversteer is far more complex than recovering understeer, so for the less experienced/weathered driver understeer is better.

OP - new tyres on the back in your case. IMHO.

Yes, I'm aware that it's legal and actually the car feels very good on the road. I was poking fun at the emphatic statements that new tyres must go on the back.At the moment it looks as if all four tyres are wearing at the same rate (RWD) so I may change them all at the same time.

It is "safer" to run into something head on, there are crumple zones, airbags, seatbelts etc. to protect you.
Go sideways into a tree and it is a different story.

No tread on the front, wet road, fail to stop at a junction, get T Boned by a lorry.
Driving on mountain roads, no tread on the front, downhill section with mud/gravel/water - go straight on and say goodbye to the World.

    :D

To be honest, I always stick the best tyres on the front of my FWD car, with all these modern 3 letter abbreviations like ABS ESP TCC, if ever the back does overtake the front, even a Real Driving God like me would probably have crashed anyway. ;)

With the weight transfer under braking, the back wheels don't do much to stop the car, the fronts probably do 75% of the work, so they need the grippiest tyres. As you say, if the fronts have no grip, the ABS will simply chop away the braking effort and it will go straight on.
